Catching up with old friends

Homemade House

It is so important to the way we work that we can see the building and the process from different perspectives, so we can do better and learn more. So each year we have a day out to spend time with former clients who have commissioned them.

This year we decided to visit two Paragraph 84 houses (formerly Paragraph 80, 79, 55......).

As defined by the NPPF, these are where "...the design is of exceptional quality .... is truly outstanding, reflecting the highest standards in architecture, and would help to raise standards of design more generally in rural areas."

Given our history of working on these projects and with new opportunities coming in to the studio, we took the opportunity to meet up with the owners of these beautiful Sussex houses.

The first and still in progress is a self-builder who we helped by preparing the construction package. 4 years later this a real labour of love and in classic Grand Designs style, they are still living in caravans on site!

It was incredible to hear their rollercoaster stories of successes and triumphs over adversity, but most uplifting was their gratitude to the old team and how much they appreciated our dedication, care and attention to their project of a lifetime.

This was a timely reminder that as we move from project to project , our clients live with and in the products of our labour.

The memories of their journey through the design and construction process remain long after we have left, so we have a duty to make the experience as memorable as the building we leave behind.
