Angmering Community Centre

RIBA Stage: 0-3 (Concept Design - Planning)

Project Value: £350,000

Sector: Local Authority / Community Centre

Consultants: Baqus (QS & Project Manager)

An existing council building in Angmering was reaching the limits of what it could offer the community, with parish offices, community and youth provision all needing a new home. The Parish council needed a scheme that could relocate and consolidate these functions while creating a genuine shared facility for local residents.

We designed a scheme that relocated the parish offices and introduced a new community centre, youth centre and cafe, extending the existing building rather than replacing it. The design deliberately referenced the massing and character of the original building so the extension reads as a natural continuation, while a more contemporary approach to form and materials gives the new facility its own distinct identity as a landmark building for the village. The cafe was positioned to serve as a shared heart to the scheme, drawing together the community and youth uses and encouraging cross use between different groups.

The result is a single, well considered civic and community hub for Angmering that brings previously scattered services under one roof. For a council project or procurement manager looking for an architect experienced in community centre design, civic building extensions and creating landmark buildings within existing local authority sites, this project shows how sensitive contextual design can sit comfortably alongside a confident, contemporary architectural approach.
